What Is an Apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy is a surgical dental procedure performed at the tip of the root when a tooth, which has been previously root canal treated, has a recurring infection and further treatment is necessary to preserve your natural tooth.
When Would a Patient Need an Apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy is needed when a prior root canal treatment does not resolve a patient’s infection. If you have had a root canal but still have pain and swelling, you may be a candidate for an apicoectomy.
Apicoectomy Recovery
You may experience discomfort and swelling following an apicoectomy and might be more swollen on the second day following the procedure. You will likely have some numbness in your gums and lips following the surgery; this is caused by the local anesthesia and will resolve on its own within a few hours. You will return to our office 5-7 days after surgery so the doctor can check to make sure things are healing well. You can eat normally and brush and floss your teeth at this point in your recovery. The gum tissue will most likely be fully healed in about 3 weeks.
