Reasons for a Pediatric Root Canal
If the dental pulp in your child’s baby or permanent tooth becomes injured or diseased, they may require a pediatric root canal. You might wonder why it’s necessary to save a baby tooth when it will eventually fall out. However, if the pulp is damaged or infected, the tooth will decay if left untreated. This can lead to the formation of an abscess, which can damage the developing permanent tooth, surrounding bone and cause significant pain.
Root canal procedures performed on baby teeth are also necessary because they:
- Save space for permanent teeth
- Preserve the shape of the face
- Prevent pain and potential bone damage
- Help maintain proper speaking and chewing functions
Dr. Anastasia Talalenko
Endodontist
“Endodontists receive at least two additional years of specialized training in root canals and related procedures beyond what general dentists and pediatric dentists undergo. They perform numerous root canals and other endodontic treatments weekly, giving them the expertise, tools, and training necessary to achieve optimal results.”
What Age Can You Get a Root Canal?
Most pediatric root canal patients are 12 years of age or older. Root canals on baby teeth are sometimes performed on children younger than this, but pre-teens and teenagers seek root canal therapy more often, especially for root canals on molar teeth.
Pediatric Root Canal Recovery
Your child may have some pain after the procedure. This is normal and should go away in a few hours. Our experiences endodontics may recommend an over-the-counter pain medicine, such as an NSAID. They will also provide uany special instructions for caring for your child’s tooth after a root canal.
